Everyone of us experiences a bad day. That is a fact of life. If there are days that everything 's so right, there is also that certain day when everything just goes wrong.
It happened to me a few times. First, I tripped on a side walk going to work. When I arrived in the to office, I was already late. And I can't seem to do my job right that day. I was also involved in a passionate discussion with a colleague on what to do about a certain task. It does not help that most of the callers on the phone were not in a very good mood either. Just when you thought that it could not get any worse, it got worst. It was exhausting. The third time this happened, I was already thinking that something I have might be causing the “bad luck”. Sure enough, I notice that this 'bad days' happens only when I'm wearing this particular shirt. When I'm not, everything seemed fine. If there were any glitches, I was able to handle them, or it does not happen in a row (s). It might just be me, but I got superstitious and did not wear that shirt anymore.
Its funny but it is human nature to play the blame game if things go awry and can't explain it. Some blame it on other people, or the weather. Even if the cause the chaos is another person, it would be best not to resort to finger-pointing. Its not productive. Instead try to help to get everything back on track, and learn what not to do next time.
Here are somethings that you can do to keep the blues at bay :
1. Eat right. The saying “ you are what you eat' might be cliché, but true. Eating too much meat can make you feel lazy because its heavy. Whereas, eating fruits and veggies are good for your digestion so you feel light inside and out.
2. Get enough sleep. When you're having enough zzzz, you'd wake up rejuvenated and in an improved mood, making you feel oh so ready to face the world and its challenges.
3. Exercise and/ or Dance. These activities improves body circulation therefore releasing chemicals called endorphins- the happy hormone.
4. Count your blessings. You may not have everything, but you have something that other people doesn't have. Observe people on the streets and you'll realize that you are far more blessed than others. ( Avoid judging them though. It will not improve your mood. Besides, we all have different stories). Be thankful that you have a decent roof over your head whatever the weather. There are some who doesn't.
Think of the consequences if you have the thing you've wanted, but does not have at the moment. For example, you don't have a car ( yet), but you are spared from shelling out money for maintenance, and it frees you from having to be in the driver's seat for hours trying to get home.
I've asked friends about the little things that made them grateful at some point. Here are some of them:
“Hitting all the green lights on the way to work.”
- Teresa, 22
“ I have my brothers to share with the one liter ice cream I purchased from the grocery. I don't have a rrefrigeratorand I could not possibly consume all that.”
- Sedney, 26
“ The smell of rain after several days of humidity”
- AJ, 33
“ The smell of the pages of a book printed in paper. The older, the better.”
- Eunice, 23
“ The wind in my face when travelling long distance in an open-air bus.”
- Christine, 24
“ An infant's smile, or a little child's giggle. Priceless.”
- Charles, 28
“ The smell of brewed coffee”
- Zeph, 26
“ The smell of malt everytime I pass by San Miguel's plant.”
- Jerry, 30
“ When a customer greets ' good day' when its their turn to be served on the counter on the bank where I work. It significantly improves my mood especially if the lines snakes all the to the entrance.”.
- Lyme, 30
“ When a computer issue is resolved on the first attempt of troubleshooting. Happy customers, good scores for me which would mean, I get to keep my job as tech support.”
- Ken, 27
“ When I visit mom's house for a few days, she'd always cook delicious meals for me.”
-Lucy, 26
“ An early morning walk. Between 5-6 am. You'd be surprise how calm the city is before the rush hour.”
- Gail, 28
5. Sing. There's some degree of liberation you'll feel after belting out a song on a videoke bar. Sing and pay attention to the lyrics of Owl City's ( with Jessie J) It's Always A Good Time. The song oozes with positivity.
6. See your old friends, reminisce the good old days make new memories.
7. Try something new. Get a new hair cut. Try an unusual color of nail polish ( preferably eye popping brights). Travel.
8. Read. You'd be amazed how the human brain works when authors come up with stories using their imagination and some research. For heartwarming stories, check out the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, Chicken Soup for the Working Mom's Soul, etc). It is a collection of true and inspiring stories about real people. It's compiled by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen.
Baz Luhrmann says in his Sunscreen Song to “not read beauty magazines, it will only make you feel ugly”. I'd say, I don't totally agree. These magazines are part and parcel of woman's life. It's where we get tips on make-up application and wardrobe updates. But seeing those ridiculously beautiful women and celebs in their million dollar gowns, makes us think that some people are simply lucky. And that is when envy come in. But think again of the things you have instead of the things you don't have. Focus on your strengths instead of your limitations.
9. Unplug. Sure, there are a lot of interesting things in the internet. But you'd be surprise how much you'll be able to accomplish different things if you disconnect those cables for a day or two.
10. Indulge your hobby.Start one if you don't have any yet. It could be crossstiching, scrapbooking, or anything that creates something beautiful out of nothing. There is a certain level of satisfaction seeing a work in progress to its completion.
10. Be optimistic. There are a few people that just get things done because their gut says that it will work. More often than not, it works. For those who are not as instinctive, you can still achieve something as long as you put your heart and soul on a certain task. Couple it with hard work, and before you know it, you had it the way it should be.
